Pathfinder vs. Shift
Both keep many accounts and web apps in one place. Shift organises them into Spaces as a polished workstation; Pathfinder gives each account a real isolated profile inside a full browser, kept on your machine.
Shift is an established Chromium-based workstation for juggling email and SaaS accounts, organised into Spaces, with a built-in AI assistant added in 2026. It needs a Shift account, and its free tier caps how many apps you can add. Pathfinder keeps things account-free and local, with no AI.
| Feature | Shift | |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple accounts of the same app | 2 per app free, unlimited on Pro | Yes (free tier limited; unlimited on Advanced) |
| Per-account isolation | A real Chromium profile per account | A Chromium container per account |
| Account required to use it | No | Yes |
| Where your data lives | Your PC only | Local, tied to your account |
| Built-in AI | None | Yes (Shift AI) |
| Ad & tracker blocker | Built in | Not built in |
| Terminal CLI & scripting | Yes | No |
| General web browsing (tabs, URL bar) | Full browser | App-focused workstation |
| Platforms | Windows only | Windows, macOS |
Who is each one for?
Neither tool is strictly better. They are built for different people. Here is the honest way to choose.
Pathfinder is for you if
You want account-free, local multi-account browsing that stays entirely on your own machine, and no AI.
You want a built-in ad and tracker blocker and a terminal CLI inside a full browser, and you are on Windows today.
Moving across is partly automatic: export your bookmarks from Shift and Pathfinder builds your dock from the bookmarks bar. Your apps themselves are re-added by hand, because Shift has no way to export its Spaces, so there is nothing for us to read. Adding an app takes a couple of clicks, and each one gets its own isolated accounts from the start.
Shift is for you if
You are on macOS or Windows and want a polished, established workstation for organising many email and SaaS accounts into Spaces, with a large library of app integrations.
You would like an optional built-in AI assistant, and you do not mind creating an account and upgrading to lift the free-tier limits.
